Child Life Specialists are trained pediatric healthcare professionals who provide psychosocial support through play, education, and preparation. Most freestanding children’s hospitals have robust Child Life programs and as the field continues to grow, so does the presence of Child Life in adult hospitals. Currently, I work as a Child Life Specialist for a large healthcare system. But instead of working in pediatrics, I work with the children and families of adult patients.

The pivot into the adult population has been equally terrifying as it has been illuminating. I’ve worked with parents my age to figure out how to explain important things like cancer. I’ve been the person to share with their kids that their loved one is dying. And when they look back at some of those really hard chapters, I’m hoping I’m one of the people they can remember with a sense of fondness and support.

Through this work, I’ve learned that children are only as resilient as the people who raise them. If parents and caregivers have healthy ways to cope, they’ll have the tools to model it for their children. My goal as a Child Life Specialist is to help parents learn how to emotionally support their children through difficult circumstances. And this begins by teaching parents how to show up for themselves, first.
