Yoga

Person rolling a black yoga mat on a beige floor, wearing a white shirt and beige pants.

The first time I learned about yoga was at Marshall’s (yes, the retail store). I picked up a book on yoga philosophy in the fitness section and remember feeling curious about the people in the photos, the different ways they contorted their bodies. Fast forward some decades later, I still can’t contort my body but I’ve been able to build a consistent yoga practice and share my passion as a teacher.

When I initially started practicing yoga, my body and I didn’t have the best relationship, so the first few months were unexpectedly hard in that I cried during almost every class. I held so many unconscious and suppressed emotions that as soon as I made space for them, everything came pouring out. Demanding to be seen, demanding to be felt, and ultimately demanding to be healed.

Yoga became more than a physical practice. It turned into a tool for self-exploration and an ongoing opportunity to develop a stronger mind-body connection. This awareness expanded well beyond the mat and bled into the way I communicated with others, with myself, with God. So when I say that I believe in yoga’s ability to heal, I’m not sharing it as a platitude but from a place of lived experience.
